World Book Day art – Fantasy Maps

I love opening a book to find a map. Think Narnia, Middle Earth,  The map provides an exciting taste of the world that is awaiting you. It’s one of the reasons I will always prefer a real book to a digital version. I love to be able to flick back and work out where I am on the map depending on what I’m reading.

To celebrate World Book Day this year, art club designed their own fantasy maps. We started by creating land shapes by carefully pouring rice on the paper. We drew around the small piles of rice to create random shapes and then carefully poured the rice back in the containers. I was really impressed by how little rice ended up on the floor!

With the land in place we started to add other features such as mountains, a compass, buildings and rivers.

Finally we painted the maps with watercolours.

This was a great activity and the children were really pleased with the results.
