Art Subject Leader Training

Schools need highly confident, competent and passionate leaders to develop art of the highest standard. More and more is expected of the art leader and it can be daunting to consider how best to describe your curriculum intent, sequential planning and how to assess. My training focuses on developing confidence and practical, manageable approaches to leading art as part of a busy teacher’s role.

This training can be run for a number of schools and works well to encourage schools to work together, share and facilitate networking.

What you’ll learn

I run Art Subject leader training over 2 half days with a Gap Task between the two sessions. The sessions include some practical drawing activities but focus mainly on developing an understanding of middle leadership responsibilities in the specific context of art. Why not combine this with practical workshops and/ or whole staff training on a specific art technique?

Session 1 (Half-day)

  • Why we need champions of art
  • How to articulate your curriculum rationale
  • Elements of a successful curriculum and developing a clear intent
  • How to get the best out of teaching and develop consistent implementation
  • Making sure it’s working and evaluating impact
  • Practical drawing activities (Blind Draw, Continuous line drawing, Negative space drawing, Simple monoprint)

Gap Task – Trial an achievable approach to monitoring art in your school

Session 2 (Half day)

  • Evaluating sketchbooks
  • Developing an impactful approach to assessment in art
  • How to effectively monitor and evaluate your subject
  • Planning for divergent and convergent outcomes in art
  • Understanding Visual Literacy
  • Practical drawing activities (Convergent and divergent outcomes)
